Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (Avilés, Febru - Santander, Septem) was a Spanish soldier and sailor and ruler of the Indies. In he reconquered Florida, after destroying Fort Caroline and other French Huguenot settlements that occupied it, and founded the city of St. Augustine.
